The USARS 7s season came to a pinnacle in Park City, UT where the boys were ready to put in a stronger showing than in years past. The last two events that the boys entered resulted in two third place finishes at both the Snead Cup in Denver and the NAWIRA 7s last november.

DAY 1:
The first match v. Pacific Coast was a physical grind, as usual, with heaps of defense and trys only coming off of broken plays and great transition play. The match was a draw at the half, with the boys pressing the Pacific in the closing minutes. The second half was plagued with mishaps that resulted in consecutive tries by the Pacific. Final score: South 12, Pacific 33.

The second game v. Mid Atlantic, the eventual champions, was the exact opposite. The controlling and calculating game of MARFU didn't allow the boys to get anything started. However, a handling error allowed for a perfect transition and a prompt strike from the South. Final score: South 7, MARFU 31.

The final match of the day proved to be a burden on the boys, as the previous two matches v. the finalists and the champions looked to have taken it's toll physically. Park City Haggis filled in for the AWOL Northeast Union, and were a formidable opponent on that day. Missed tackles were the theme for the match, and resulted in a 20 minute tackling session following the match. Final score: South 12, Park City 33.

DAY 2:
As the opening match for the day, the South took on a more experienced West union. The tackling session seemed to have had an affect on the boys, as the defense was stiff, but the continuity of the West game allowed for their support runners to feast on open gaps in multiphase play. Final score: South 7, West 40.

The final match paired us up against the Park City squad that had defeated us the day before. They proved not to be as worthy an opponent on this day. Every phase of play, offense, defense, and transitions were controlled by the South. The perfect way to end on a high note for such a difficult tournament. Final score: South 45, Park City 5.

Overall, the concensus from the other union coaches, National team coach Al Caravelli, and spectators was that the level of play has improved from our union. Although I would agree, we are far from competitive enough to dominate at the national level. I believe that growth comes with change, and our program has transformed itself into a true 7s squad over the last, although the results at the 2007 NASC proved otherwise. Furthermore, changes must take place in order for our squad's performance to continue to grow. Our next event is NAWIRA 7s, November 16 and 17, in Nassau, Bahamas. The squad has been completely revamped with a majority of invitees that have been never in the South player pool. The heart of the team will remain with 4 incumbent players returning, but this changing of the guard will promote South 7s to the smaller clubs and hopefully increase the overall interest of the South union in the 7s season, and in turn improve the standard of play for 7s in the South.

Wish us luck, I'll keep you posted with our results from NAWIRA!!

Cheers,
austin

It's sevens season again, and we are poised for a strong showing at the 2007 NASC 7s. Attached is the 2007 men's sevens schedule. In order to be selected for USARS 7s, you must participate on a team in the qualifier division in at
least one of the two qualifier tournaments that I will be scouting at. There will be two testing and training camps throughout the summer and a trip to Denver, CO for competition at the 2007 Sneath Cup, after which I will solidify a team to compete at the 2007 NASC 7s. Best of luck in the rest of
the 15s season and for a successful 7s season!

**USARS7 results at 2006 NAWIRA 7's**

On day one, we were in Pool C with Guadeloupe, the British Virgin Islands,
and Trinidad & Tobago:

USARS 12 v. Guadeloupe 10
USARS 38 v. British Virgin Islands 7
USARS 12 v. Trinidad & Tobago 10

After going undefeated in our pool, this put us in a position to compete for the Cup. on day two, we were in Pool Cup 1 with Guyana and Mexico:

USARS 7 v. Mexico 5
USARS 7 v. Guyana 19

The win against Mexico put us into the semifinals of the Cup v. Jamaica:

USARS 12 v. Jamaica 17

Final record:
4-2
Cup Semi-finalist

On a positive note, both of our losses this weekend came to the finalist, Jamaica, and eventual cup winner, Guyana. We finished the tourney 3rd out of 14 teams, so I'm happy with the result, but not satisfied. i believe it was our lack of experience and fitness that ultimately limited us in this tournament. We were close in all of the games except for BVI, but that's what will make the difference for us at future 7's events and the 2007 ITT's. Our confidence and composure under pressure grew exponentally, which made this trip a success for us as a club and an invaluable experience.

I would like to give thanks to USA rugby for the opportunity to represent the USA at this event, and am sorry we didn't bring home any hardware. I would also like to thank Dick Elliot, who acted as the tour manager, and took care of all of our needs while in Barbados. Furthermore, thanks goes out to who seemed to be our only fans out there, Kevin and Jill Kitto. They provided us with great support,  barrels of laughs, and one strongly performed haka. :) The final thanks goes to the players that participated on the squad, and those who were left behind. A stellar effort all weekend, and certainly one to build on.

There were many doubters of our program in this and other countries, but we proved to them and ourselves that we can be a force to be reckoned with and that we have the athletes to compete at the national and international level. I also feel blessed that we have earned invitations to participate more international events like this, as our next tour will take us to the Bahamas 7's in May.

Cheers and Go Panthers!!
